The Farne Islands lie in the very north
east of England, just off the Northumberland coast midway between
the fishing village of Seahouses and the ancient Northumbria capital
of Bamburgh.
The group of islands that
lie 1.5 to 6 miles off the North sea coast are preserved as a
bird sanctuary by the national trust. As
well as being a haven for birds the area is a magnet for grey
seals, in fact seals from colonies all over the UK regularly head
for the area known as the Farne box.
The seals are very curious towards
divers, they slowly creep forwards using their forward flippers
until they come face to face with you, the secret is to extend
their curiosity by slowly retreating as they approach, the biggest
mistake is to try to approach them as they will quickly dart off,
only to come back and nibble your fins when you are looking in
the opposite direction.
The area is also renowned for
shipwrecks. Over the centuries numerous victims have been claimed
indeed on one of the islands Longstone stands the most powerful
lighthouse in Europe.
